University Art Museum, University of New Mexico
The University Art Museum at the University of Mexico was founded in 1963, Since its inception the Museum has grown to become an important regional institution, representing the largest fine art collection in the state, as well as an invaluable member of the University community.
The Museum’s mission is primarily an educational one. In addition to providing direct support of academic programs at the University, the Museum seeks to contribute to the cultural life of the city and state, as well as to the international scholarly community. To this end, the Museum preserves and collects art, presents exhibitions and programs, and promotes, conducts and publishes scholarly research. The Museum is the only state institution whose collections and exhibitions regularly encompass art from outside the region, but also seeks to serve as a venue for the cultures which have flourished in the area for centuries.
The regular program of lectures, talks, symposia and exhibitions are the supplement to the heart of the Museum which is truly its collections. The University Art Museum owns 24,000 objects, including paintings, drawings, prints, photographs and sculpture. The Museum regularly displays pieces from this substantial collection. The Jonson Gallery, a satellite venue, houses works by modernist painter Raymond Jonson, his contemporaries and his students.
