Studio Theatre

1077The Studio Theatre was incorporated in 1978 by the current Artistic and Managing Director, Joy Zinoman. She had founded an Acting Conservatory in 1975 whose students formed the basis of a fledgling theatre. Soon a professional theatre, The Studio Theatre was the first Washington theatre to negotiate a Small Professional Theatre contract with Actors’ Equity. The 20th anniversary of the Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory was celebrated in 1995.

The theatre progressed from space at 1443 Rhode Island shared with the Dance Theatre, to a renovated 110-seat space at 1401 Church Street, to the present location at 1333 P Street. This building was purchased in 1993 and a sweeping $3.5 million renovation to add a second theatre space was completed in March of 1997.

The newly renovated Mead Theatre on the building’s first floor and the new Milton Theatre on the second floor are both 200-seat facilities. This will make it possible to indefinitely extend popular shows while also adhering to a rigid schedule to serve subscribers. When a production proves to be a hit, the next scheduled production can be mounted in the second theatre. Subscribers continue to attend the season of plays exactly as it was originally scheduled.

Now the third largest producing theatre in the city, the Studio has received 87 Helen Hayes nominations for artistic excellence and is a recipient ofthe Mayor’s Arts Award.
