Albright-Knox Art Gallery
The Albright-Knox Art Gallery enjoys a worldwide reputation as an outstanding center of modern art. Its collection has been cited as “one of the world’s top international surveys of contemporary painting and sculpture” and is especially rich in American and European art of the past fifty years, mostly acquired through the farsighted generosity of its patron, the late Seymour H. Knox. The older of the two Gallery structures was designed in the Greek Revival style by Edward B. Green in 1905; the new addition, designed by Gordon Bunshaft of Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill, and donated by the Seymour H. Knox Foundation, was inaugurated in 1962. Additional exhibition galleries are located in Clifton Hall, the red brick building located just south of the 1905 and 1962 buildings, which is connected to the main Gallery building by an underground pedestrian link. Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution
The Arthur M. Sackler Gallery is located on the National Mall at 1050 Independence Avenue S.W., in Washington.
The Smithsonian Institution is the largest museum complex in the world with 14 museums and the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. and 2 museums in New York.
The Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, a national museum of Asian art for the United States, is a Smithsonian museum dedicated to advancing public interest and knowledge about the arts and cultures of Asia through exhibitions, publications, research and education.
The gallery opened in 1987 to house a gift of some 1,000 works of Asian art from Dr. Arthur M. Sackler (1913-1987), a research physician and medical publisher from New York City. Among the highlights of his gift were early Chinese bronzes and jades, Chinese paintings and lacquerware, ancient Near Eastern ceramics and metalware, and sculpture from South and Southeast Asia. Sackler also donated $4 million toward construction of the gallery.
Founded to share the historical focus of its sister museum, the Freer Gallery of Art (also a national museum of Asian art at the Smithsonian), the Sackler Gallery has increased the range of Asian art activities at the Smithsonian, developed an active program of international loan exhibitions, and embraced contemporary art and a wide range of media and artistic practice.
Since 1987, the gallery’s collections have expanded through purchase and gift to include an important assemblage of the arts of the Persian book from the 11th to the 19th centuries; 19th and 20th century Japanese prints and contemporary porcelain; Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and South Asian painting; and sculpture and ceramics from Japan and South and Southeast Asia.
The Sackler Gallery is connected by an underground exhibition space to the neighboring Freer Gallery of Art. Although their collections are stored and exhibited separately, the two museums share a director, administration and staff.
The Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Auditorium, located in the Freer, provides a venue for a broad variety of free public programs relating to the collections of the Freer and Sackler galleries, including concerts of Asian music and dance, films, lectures, chamber music and dramatic presentations.
