Homewood House
We are now updating all of our schedules for the 2001-2002 season. We have no event listings for this organization for one of two reasons: we have requested updates and they will be added as soon as we receive them, or the organization is currently not producing events. (Many organizations operate only seasonally.) Please check back in the future, as our calendar is updated daily and new events are posted as soon as they are received. Thank you.the Homewood House is one of the oldest buildings in the city of Baltimore.
This National Historic Landmark was the private residence of one of the state’s most revered families, and the 1801 building is important not only as an historic site but also as a stunning example of Federal architecture and contemporary restoration. The House is operated and maintained by the Historic Houses of Johns Hopkins University and open to the public.
The Carroll family was one of the wealthiest families in the then-new nation, and the home of Charles Carroll Jr. is correspondingly opulent. The superb interior architectural ornamentation reflects the finest materials and workmanship that money can buy. An extensive renovation project has restored the home to the condition it was in when the Carroll family lived there. Details such as the color of the walls and the marbling of the baseboards are reconstructed with care, and the results are impressive.
Stepping into the Homewood House is the equivalent of stepping back in time. No detail has been overlooked in the process of recreating this architectural gem, and the house provides an educational and entertaining look back into the history of this country and the evolution of domestic space.
