Scouting Report: John Barrymore was a newspaper cartoonist until 1903, when he joined the family business of acting. He won critical acclaim during his stage career for his roles in Peter Ibbetson, Redemption, Richard III, and Hamlet. He was nicknamed “The Great Profile” for his handsome looks and stage presence. Barrymore belonged to what Edna Ferber and George S. Kaufman referred to as The Royal Family (1927) of America, and incorporated the family into the above play at England’s Theatre Royal in 1934. He was the youngest son of Maurice Barrymore and Georgiana Drew-Barrymore , as well as younger brother to Lionel Barrymore and Ethel Barrymore. He was also grandfather to Drew Barrymore of E.T. fame.
