Arena Stage

Now in its fifth decade, Arena Stage continues to provide Washington and the nation with theater of the highest artistic quality. Presenting an eclectic and expansive spectrum of dramatic literature that encompasses the classics of American repertory, unjustly neglected works, musicals, exciting new plays for the world stage, and original American work, Arena consistently presents compelling examples of the creativity and talent that have garnered the theater’s 54 prestigious Helen Hayes Awards—more than any other Washington-area theater.

Arena Stage boasts a distinguished history and an enduring reputation for excellence. In addition to being among the first resident theaters in the country, Arena was the first theater outside of New York to win a Tony Award, the first theater in Washington, DC, to admit people of color, and the first theater in America to tour the former Soviet Union. During its 48-year history, the theater has been a home for such rising stars as James Earl Jones, Jane Alexander, Dianne Wiest, Kevin Kline, James Woods, Ned Beatty, Stacey Keach and Robert Prosky.

Arena Stage is proud to enter a new era in its historical and artistic legacy with Molly Smith as Artistic Director. Ms. Smith brings to Washington a new theatrical depth and dimension that comes from a long history of innovation, collaboration and creation.
