We are now updating all of our schedules for the 2001-2002 season. We have no event listings for this organization for one of two reasons: we have requested updates and they will be added as soon as we receive them, or the organization is currently not producing events. (Many organizations operate only seasonally.) Please check back in the future, as our calendar is updated daily and new events are posted as soon as they are received. Thank you.The Albany Institute of History & Art is one of New York’s finest art institutions and is the cornerstone of the cultural and artistic life in the city of Albany. The Institute opened its doors in 1791, which makes the Institute older even than such venerable and world-renowned institutions as the Louvre and the Smithsonian Institution.

The Institute is located in two buildings on Washington Avenue in the heart of historic Albany. The Institute building was constructed in 1907 to house the Institute and the adjacent William Gorham Rice House, which dates from 1894, has long been a neighbor and partner site for the Institute’s offices and additional gallery space. The Museum is currently undergoing a major renovation project. A new space designed by the firm Solomon+Bauer Architects of Watertown, Massachusetts, unites the two separate buildings with a lovely glass walled addition which contains much-needed space for galleries and educational programs.

The Albany Institute of History & Art is dedicated to the collection, preservation, interpretation and promotion of the history, art and culture of Albany and the upper Hudson Valley Region. This mission is clearly reflected in the comprehensive series of temporary exhibitions and related educational programming at the Institute.

The strongest asset of the Institute in the completion of its mission is, however, its collections.the collections at the Albany Institute document four centuries of regional history, art and culture. The diverse collection of 15,000 objects contains priceless examples reflecting the significance of the region. Treasures of the collection include a large group of Hudson River School paintings, some early Dutch limner portraits which are among the first portraits made in America, as well as Albany and New York-made silver, furniture, sculpture, pewter, ceramics and other decorative arts. The Institute also collects contemporary works by regional artists, to assure that the collection contains pieces which are sure to be integral to the history of the region in the future.
